I always imagined the album as a journey and To Be Sky as the first leg of the trip. The song starts with the strumming of a Greek djura before a Persian daf brings on the trance and it’s an example of the kind of instrumentation that I’ve tried to use throughout the record to decorate the songs and stories. To Be Sky is the tale the narrator or dreamer remembers from his dream. In it, he describes all the things he has found but upon waking, was powerless to keep. At the end, naked and bereft, he remembers: “To the gates of the temple I rode, saw the ruins of the kingdom and wept.”
lyrics
Found an ocean but it dried away
Found a rock but it crumbled to dust
Found a valley it was cold as ice
Found a mountain couldn't reach the top
To be lost is to be found
To be sky is ever to go down to the
Ground and earth and earth are bound
To be sky is ever to rise up from the ground
Found a fire but it burnt to ash
Found a lover lover gave me up
Found a dream left me for dead
Found a heaven wouldn’t let me in
To be lost is to be found
To be sky is ever to go down to the
Ground and earth and earth are bound
To be sky is ever to rise up from the ground
From the ground
From the ground
From the ground
From the ground
How the arc reared above the mist
At the dawn of the morning bright
To the gates of the temple I rode
Saw the ruins of the kingdom and wept
